Today, I sat in Central Park eating a ginormous bagel, and considered that my life is very good just now.

I would really love to come and see you guys! I'd forgotten that when I was planning this trip you weren't in the list of people who wanted to see me, cos this was before you moved to Cambridge. The question is, can you explain to a geographically impaired person how she would get from here (New York) to where you are?

I'm travelling for 10 days from Tuesday, so. I could come and see you on Monday 1st August (is it even sensible to do it as a day trip, and if not, can I stay over?) Or else Tuesday 16th or Wednesday 17th? If it's better for you, this Sunday (31st July) or Sunday 14th or Monday 15th are possible, though would require some rearranging.

Tuesday 16th/17th would be fine. It's not really a day trip much. I'll take both days off from work.

The best way to come up from New York is generally the Acela train on Amtrak, which costs about £79 for a return ticket. The cheapest way by far is Fung Wah bus, which leaves from New York's Chinatown and arrives in Boston's Chinatown, which costs £18. There are also flights, but I don't know much about them -- by motorway, it's a 3.5 hour trip, which, once you consider the 70 minute flying time, the standard hour-early checkin, the time to find a cab from DelayGuardia . . . you come out about the same and it costs far less.

We'll set it up so you can have an overnight, and we'll visit around Boston quite a bit, as well as hang out in the PRC. (Some wag put up signs in 1993 on the Charles River bridges -- "Entering People's Republic of Cambridge - Passport Control Next Right")

Is there anything in particular you'd like to see?

Jess, that's so sweet of you, thank you so much! I've heard about the Fung Wah bus and I think that would the best option for me, cos I don't really have enough spare money for the train with all the other trips I'm doing at the moment. My plan is to leave here earlyish on Tuesday morning, so arrive in Boston around lunchtime? Then I rather need to be back by not too late on Wednesday, so I'd probably leave early afternoon, does that make sense for you?

I know absolutely nothing about Cambridge or Boston so I'm happy for you to decide what's worth doing or seeing. I'm very excited about getting to visit a new place though. What's the best way to get to you from the bus?

Take the Fung Wah Bus, whichever one you like, they depart hourly, to Boston South Station. To get on the Fung Wah Bus, you have to go to Canal Street in Chinatown. I believe it's 130 Canal. They have something that resembles a hot dog stand that has their ticket stand. It's $15 US most days, so $30 for a return ticket.

I can meet you at South Station where the Fung Wah Bus lets out, with las señoritas, so let me know which one you'll choose?
